The LinearChain represents a completely differently approach to high-force linear motion. Unlike the usual hydraulic, pneumatic, or screw-type actuator, the LinearChain can be looped or folded for storage, but becomes rigid when operated under thrust load. The LinearChain is an “open ended” chain with two free ends and just one drive sprocket, instead of the classic chain system involving a continuous chain with two or more sprocket wheels and a tensioning element.
The drive can be located wherever it is most convenient (see Illustration 1). The load can be fixed to one end of the chain using the mounting holes on the front link. The other end of the chain can be guided as needed for the application.
To keep the space requirement to a minimum, it is can be rolled up or “folded” in a storage magazine (see Illustration 2).
The ease with which the retracted length can be minimized offers the designer space saving advantages and flexibility not found in traditional linear actuators. The LinearChain is constructed from special hardened steel and is available in three sizes: 25 mm, 40 mm and 60 mm pitch. Stainless steel or annealed steel is also available. The LinearChain can handle thrust forces from 5000 N to 35 kN.

The chains are given their unique push force characteristics by incorporating specially shaped side links that engage and support each other with very little axial play
(see Illustration 3).
The typical applications for the LinearChain are push-pull movement of medium-sized and large loads in any direction (including vertical movement). The chain sprocket can be driven by any gear motor, but maximum space savings and flexibility is achieved with the Framo-Morat Compacta® gearmotors and actuators. |
